Action Alert – Ask Minister Roberts to protect the Northern Rivers
Recently the NSW Government announced the renewal of a CSG Exploration Licence that covers a large area of the Northern Rivers. Covering Lismore, Nimbin, Kyogle and surrounds, this licence renewal sends a clear message that the government and the gas industry is looking to continue CSG exploration and development in our region.
We urgently need to send our own message to the state government that we will not accept any threat to our land, our water or our children’s future.
Will you take the time this coming week to send a message to Minister for Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts, explaining to him your thoughts and feelings on the plans to turn the Northern Rivers into an industrialised gasfield?
A couple points to remember when writing or calling:
- Our community has overwhelmingly voted yes to a gasfield free Northern Rivers. We are speaking with one voice, democracy needs to be respected and our community demands to be listened to.
- The NSW Chief Scientist has flagged many threats posed by the unconventional gas industry and has recommended that certain areas are deemed as inappropriate and should be classed as no go zones for gasfields. The Northern Rivers fits that description, given our high population density, our reliance on our clean and green image which is critical to the agricultural and tourism industry and that most of our rivers, creeks and dams rely on underground water, the entire region should be declared a no go zone.

Together we’ve achieved so much here in the Northern Rivers over this past year. From the glory of Bentley where thousands came out to protect our region, to the support for Gasfield Free by all seven of the Local Councils in our region, to the awesome march of many thousands on the streets of Lismore, the resilience and verve of the Northern Rivers people is inspiring and empowering people across the county and the world.
We thank you for your ongoing support and we wish you and your family a happy and safe Christmas break.
Elly and Dean,
Gasfield Free Northern Rivers Coordinators
