Visiting your local MP
Meeting with your local Member of Parliament is a powerful action you can take to help protect the Northern Rivers from invasive gasfields. This builds on the efforts of Bentley landholders, Gasfield Free Northern Rivers representatives and other local community members who have met with our elected representatives to express their concerns and ask for action on this issue.
With Metgasco’s licence currently suspended, a state election due in March 2015, and some MP’s now supporting the idea of licence cancellation, now is the time to visit your local member and ask them to cancel the gas licences covering the Northern Rivers! The Office of Coal Seam Gas has clearly stated that failed community consultation is grounds for licence cancellation, so now is the opportunity for our local MP’s to represent us and act to cancel Metgasco’s PEL 16 and other exploration licences across the region.
Below is a guide to visiting your local member so that you can confidently express your desire for a Gasfield Free Northern Rivers.
Who is my local member of parliament?
Your local member is determined by your State electorate. You can check this via the NSW Electoral Commission website or by knowing your electorate:
LISMORE: Thomas George, MP, 55 Carrington Street LISMORE, (02) 6621 3624, firstname.lastname@example.org
CLARENCE: Christopher Gulaptis, MP, 11 Prince Street GRAFTON, (02) 6643 1244, email@example.com
BALLINA: Donald Page, MP, Shop 1, 7 Moon Street, BALLINA, (02) 6686 7522, firstname.lastname@example.org
TWEED: Geoff Provest, MP, 103 Minjungbal Drive, TWEED HEADS SOUTH, (07) 5523 4816, email@example.com
Make an Appointment
Contact your local member’s office to make an appointment to meet. A member is likely to be in their electorate office when parliament is not sitting (before 5 August & after 18th September) so seek an appointment as soon as possible. If your member is reluctant to meet because they are hostile to the subject of invasive gasfields, you could seek to meet them on the premise of something else you feel strongly about (such as affordable housing, health, water protection, food security etc) all of which will be impacted by gasfield industrialisation.
If your MP refuses to meet with you, politely ask the reasons why and make a note of this in the MP visiting register (below).
We’ve developed a tip sheet for visiting your MP, to assist you in confidently asking your local representative to cancel PELs across the Northern Rivers.
Our Land Our Water Our Future has also collated a number of resources to assist with talking to MPs. These resources are great for understanding some of the background and policy framework around gas and coal mining, but don’t feel like you have to read everything to confidently express your desire for a Gasfield Free Northern Rivers!
