MEDIA ALERT: GAS FIELD FREE PAGE ELECTION CANDIDATES FORUM
GAS FIELD FREE ELECTION CANDIDATES FORUM IN LISMORE
WHAT: PAGE ELECTION CANDIDATES FORUM
WHERE: Italo Club, Nth. Lismore
WHEN: 6.30pm Tuesday 27th August
Coal seam gas mining is an important election issue in the marginal seat of Page where we know that over 87% of voters want the Northern Rivers to remain free of invasive industrial gas fields. CSG Free Northern Rivers has invited Page candidates to a forum to tell the electorate what they will do to protect our region from CSG and other forms of unconventional gas extraction. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates.
This Forum follows on from last week’s Environmental Defenders Office report that confirms that the Federal Parliament has wide constitutional powers to control coal and unconventional gas mining and that far-reaching national reforms as called for by Lock the Gate Alliance are possible.
The Forum will also be informed by a recent analysis by the Lock the Gate Alliance of eight political parties’ policies and actions which concludes that Labor, Liberals and the Nationals have failed in their duty to protect Australians from the risks involved with rapid expansion of coal and gas mining, with leadership coming from the minor parties. The report, titled ‘The Country is Calling: How Are Our Federal Politicians Responding?’, provides a comparison of party platforms and voting records against Lock The Gate Alliance’s national law reform agenda on coal and gas mining.
