MR: National MPs miss window of opportunity to deliver gasfield free outcome

Gasfield Free Northern Rivers has delivered their second “Window of Opportunity” to State members of parliament and candidates in the four state electorates of the Northern Rivers.

The campaign brings together a series of questions related to unconventional gas mining in the Northern Rivers that many members of our community are most concerned about.

All MP’s and candidates that have responded and answered the questions are included below. The three current national party members in Lismore, Tweed, the Clarence and the candidate for Ballina failed to answer any of the questions.

“I’m disappointed that none of the National Members of Parliament bothered to answer our questions.” said Charles Wilkinson, a landholder who lives at Bentley, near Metgasco’s last attempted drilling site, for which approval was suspended earlier this year.

“As a primary producer I cannot and will not accept any threat to my water, land or home. I look towards our representatives to support our community and do whatever they can to stop unconventional gas mining in our region. “

“The questions all related to what they could do to ensure our region remains gasfield free and the fact that none of them answered any of them is very disturbing” he said

Members of the local community turned out in front of the member for Lismore, Thomas George’s office in Lismore today to sing modified Christmas carols calling for a Gasfield Free future while Gasfield free coordinator Dean Draper announced the results of the questions to the media.

“We’re here today to show our dismay that the Nationals press release released last month titled ‘Framework for a Gasfield Free Northern Rivers’ turns out to have no substance.

“We asked them some questions to test their resolve and what should have been a simple exercise was put in the too hard basket by all four of the Nationals. It’s a debacle.

“However, it is the festive season, so today we are at the office of Thomas George asking the NSW National Party to get in the Christmas spirit and give the Northern Rivers the Christmas present everyone is asking for – a Gasfield Free Northern Rivers.

“As we go into another year of uncertainty of our future, our community is sending a very clear message that we are steadfast in our demand to remain gasfield free” said Mr Draper
