Permanent Protection Getting Closer for the Northern Rivers
Gasfield Free Northern Rivers are very happy to hear the news today that several Northern Rivers MP’s are working to change the Government’s policy on unconventional gas by calling for a ban for the Northern Rivers at next month’s National party conference in the Hunter.
Gasfield Free Coordinator Dean Draper said “It’s obvious that the results of the NSW election, when Ballina changed to the Greens and other areas of the Northern Rivers very nearly changed as well, have driven home the message that the overwhelming majority of the Northern Rivers wants to remain Gasfield Free.
“We support our MP’s in their call to ban unconventional gas in our region. This invasive industry is inappropriate for our highly populated and fragile ecosystem.” he said.
“We applaud Chris Gulaptis, Ben Franklin and Kevin Hogan for standing with their community and look forward to Thomas George backing them in their move to ban unconventional gas here.
“Tamara Smith the Greens MP for Ballina has been working with us and calling for protection since being elected and we thank her for that.
“A ban would release our community from the stress and strain they have been living under for over four years with the threat of gas mining hanging above our heads.
“We do not want to be forced to return to the blockades and are happy that our elected representatives finally seem to be listening. We look forward to working with them to ensure our region is permanently protected so that we can all get on with our lives.
